A question: Your building’s AESMR says your building is compliant.

(Annual Essential Safety Measure Report)

How compliant is it?

The fire contractor ticks a sheet that your sprinklers are fine.

The door inspection contractor is ticking a sheet, and things are fine.

The emergency exit light contractor ticks a sheet that things are fine.

This is handed over to a surveyor to sign off the annual AESMR

Let’s dive a bit deeper.

Do you have an EXIT sign that says “EXIT” I guarantee that your fitting will fail for more than one reason.

In my experience, batteries in an exit fitting last at best 5 years, “EXIT” signs were discontinued 20+ years ago in favour of an international standard, the running person. Additionally, as best practice, there should be consistent wayfinding in your building.

Over the years, I’ve had contractors (of a Tier 1 company) in the carpark under CCTV, on the phone, “helping another site”, for 7.6 hours. Then, submit a tick sheet saying the building is compliant.

Who cares, you say, I have my tick sheet. My building is compliant. What happens when these systems are required?
